One budget cut considered by the California legislature is the suspension of a holding period for animals held at public shelters. If you’re a pet owner, you may have much to lose from such a cut.
California's Hayden Law is intended to increase survival odds of animals received at kill shelters. This includes lost pets. Without the Hayden law, a lost pet has three days or less to be claimed. That means a pet lost while the owner is traveling could be euthanized before the owner even realizes its missing.
Protect your pet (including indoor only) from accidental or emergency separation. Ask your vet to implant a microchip and update identification tags. Tattooing is another option depending on the animal. Plus recent photos highlighting your pet’s distinctive features are a valuable tool.
The Hayden Law is not the only threatened resource that could affect your pet. Make sure your pet has every opportunity to return to you in spite of budget shortfalls at shelters.
